South Africa’s ultimate end-of-year moving survival guide

The end of the year is one of South Africa’s busiest moving periods. As schools close, lease agreements expire, and thousands of people travel, relocate for work, or return home for the holidays, moving companies and cleaning services report a sharp spike in demand. Whether you are shifting to a new city, returning to family after a long year of juggling costs, or settling into a fresh start for 2026, moving remains one of life’s most stressful tasks.

With a bit of planning and a few tried-and-tested hacks, relocating does not need to leave you frazzled. Here is how to approach your next move with the calm and confidence of someone who has done it before.

End-of-year reality check

Local moving and logistics companies say November to January is their busiest season. This means higher demand for trucks, more pressure on booking slots, and increased competition for cleaners and handymen.

Most South Africans in this period fall into one of three groups: people going home for the December break, people relocating permanently, and students or young professionals moving after leases end.

“We generally see a hike in people booking our moving services towards the end of each month, but the end of year also gives people natural pause as they reassess their budgets, their plans, and their living arrangements,” says Rishka Matthews, Head of Marketing at Sweepsouth. The company offers once-off help during the moving process, with packing preparation, moving of boxes and deep cleaning of both the space you’re leaving behind and moving into.

According to Matthews, sourcing help for the moving process is driven by how draining moving can be: “People want to start the new year with energy, not exhaustion. Getting help with the heavy cleaning or odd jobs means they can focus on settling in rather than spending entire weekends scrubbing.”

“We also know that leaving your apartment squeaky clean gives you a better shot at receiving your deposit back. This can be particularly helpful if you’re planning on continuing to rent in the next year or are moving to another apartment. Sweepsouth has professionals who can help with exactly that.” concludes Matthews.

For many families, especially those returning home from university or jobs in other cities, this support makes the transition smoother and helps them move into the new year with a sense of order.

Smart moving tips

  • Declutter before you pack a thing

Before you look at boxes, do a clear-out. If you haven’t used something in a year, it is probably not worth the trip to your new home, advises Matthews. “Donating, selling, or recycling lightens the load and lowers your moving costs. As you pack, keep a “donation” box handy for things you no longer need. Knowing those items will benefit others, and seeing the donation box fill up, can be highly motivating during the stressful moving process,” she says.

  • Prepare a ‘first night’ box

Put together a box or suitcase with essentials: toiletries, kettle, tea or coffee, medication, chargers, toilet paper, a towel and a change of clothes. “Keep this with you, not with the movers, so you are not digging through 15 boxes just to make a cuppa,” advises Matthews. “A box of essentials functions as a portable oasis of calm during an exhausting day. Our expert movers also advise to pack a box that you keep with you for when you arrive at your new home that has garbage bags, an all-purpose cleaner, and a basic toolkit in it.”

  • Photograph your cables

Before unplugging your TV, Wi-Fi router, or sound system, take a quick picture of the cables. At the end of a long moving day, those photos are the difference between frustration and instant connectivity.

  • Use what you already have

Suitcases with wheels are perfect for heavy items like books. Laundry baskets and storage tubs work well for linen, cushions, and other soft items. It saves money on boxes and makes carrying easier.

  • Pack plates vertically

Wrap each plate and pack them upright,  like vinyl records, to minimise breakage – towels and T-shirts make excellent padding, advises Matthews.

  • Prevent leaks before they happen

For toiletries and cleaning products, place a small piece of cling wrap under the cap before screwing it back on. This avoids messy leaks in transit.

A fresh start, without the chaos

Moving will probably never be anyone’s favourite activity, but with smart preparation and a realistic understanding of how busy the year-end period becomes, it can be significantly less stressful, says Matthews. “Whether you are heading home for December, relocating permanently, or simply turning the page on a long year, the right planning ensures your move feels like part of the new beginning, not the obstacle to it.”
